My rating: 2 of 5 stars
I have loved Alice in Wonderland since I was a little girl. So when I heard about this book being based off wonderland in the city of Hearts, I was excited! The book is about a girl named Catherine who is expected to Mary the King of Hearts (regardless of the fact that she doesn’t want to). At the ball she attends with her parents where the King is to propose she meets the King’s joker and instantly feels an attraction to him.
Catherine’s dream is to open a bakery with her best friend and servant Mary-Ann. Her parents dream for her is to become the Queen of Hearts.
I liked Catherine’s character and that my favorite Wonderland character the Cheshire Cat is in the story. Beyond that I am sad to say I found the book to be boring and the story line dragged so much it took me a few months to read this book. I felt I needed to take long breaks from this book and read other books before coming back to it. I lost completed interest in the story less than half way through and became a chore to complete instead of a book I wanted to read. I just felt the storyline was bland and that Catherine became bland up until the ending that is. Don’t worry, no spoilers here!
It feels like a huge let down to not love a book based loosely on a favorite book. This one will be going into the pile to sell to the used bookstore. I will say I have loved other books by Marissa Meyer but this one didn’t hit the same level has her other books. Maybe it is because of my huge love for anything Alice in Wonderland and setting my expectations too high since I know others loved it.
