My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I have read this book 10+ times since it was first given to me at age 8. There is just something about this book that pulls you in, warms your heart and you never get sick of reading it. Anne is such an amazing character bringing love and life to all those around her. I loved the movie and when I saw there was an audiobook I listened to that too. (It was great, fantastic narrator). If you have never read this book, you are missing out, I feel it is a must read for everyone. The other books in the series didn’t have the same magic that this one did. Anne was an orphan who was unloved and treated like hired help by any household she had stayed in. When she came to Green Gables to live with Marilla and Matthew (who are older, childless and siblings) she feels she has found a place she can truly call home until she finds out she was a mistake and Marilla and Matthew really wanted a boy. Anne is homely, has red hair that she hates, a wild imagination and a tongue she can’t seem to control and yet once people get over the shock of her they find they fall in love with the kind soul that she is. Reading as Marilla goes from a cold and unloving woman to one who realizes she loves Anne dearly and she is the daughter she never had brought tears to my eyes even after reading this story so many times. This truly is a timeless classic for the young, old and all those in between.
