Review

I honestly can’t say why it has taken me so long to review this book, when it is one of my favorite books ever written. In my baby book and in many birthday cards over the years from my Mother she would write “I’ll love you forever, I’ll like you for always, As long as I’m living, My baby you’ll be.” I assumed she had come up with that because I have no memory of ever reading this book. While pregnant with my daughter in 2012, I stumbled upon this book while shopping for books for the nursery and was surprised to find what I thought was my Mother’s say written for me in this book. I bought the book and found I cried every time I read it (could have been the pregnancy hormones, who knows). When I talked about it with my Mother she said how much she loved that saying from the book so she had used it all my life. It wasn’t until my daughter was born and I started seeing how quickly she grew and changed that those words took on such a meaning for me.

I now can read the book without crying and was surprised recently to find my daughter really loves this book to be read to her. Previously, I have tried reading it to her and she had zero interested but now that she is 3.5 years old she loves it. She will actually request it to be read again write after I finish reading it. This is such an emotional story that any parent can relate to but the true story of why this book was written is even more emotional.

The Author Robert Munsch and his wife had two babies born dead so he wrote the lyrics as a song for his dead babies:

“I’ll love you forever
I’ll like you for always
As long as I’m living
My baby you’ll be.”

This story has touched so many adults and sure the drawings show the age of the book, since the clothing styles are very outdated but that doesn’t matter. This story I feel will live on forever, right along side of Good Night Moon. The end is what really chokes me up, when the mother is too sick to sing to her son, so instead he picks her up and rocks her and sings to her instead. How beautiful is that!

I can’t promise your child will love this book, I am actually shocked that my daughter loves this book now. But I can say any parent will be moved by this book and I feel it would make a great baby shower gift for a new Mom. I plan to keep my copy to give to my daughter someday and I plan to include the lyrics just like my Mom did while I was growing up in all my cards. I enjoy reading this book and while it tugs at your heart it is truly an amazing book.
